John Hanks is a multifaceted musician that accompanies many classes for the Duke Dance Program, primarily modern, jazz and ballet, and serves as the Musician Coordinator for the Dance Program. John has been a long-time musician for the American Dance Festival's summer intensives, including sessions in Korea and China. He also performs annually with the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble (NCYTE) and the NC Rhythm Tap Festival featuring Michelle Dorrance. In addition, John composes electro-acoustic percussion music for dance and has released several albums, including "Here Come the Drums" and "Drumjazz", available on major streaming platforms. A respected drumset artist, he performs locally with the Willie Painter Band and is a frequent guest drummer with Beach Music faves, Jim Quick & Coastline. He has also played recently with the Atomic Rhythm All Stars, Mint Julip Jazz Band, and Queen Bee & the Honey Lovers. On the classical music side, John is a timpanist and percussionist with Duke Chapel Choir and Orchestra, the Choral Society of Durham, and Mallarmé Music.
