The course provides a broad survey of Asian dance and dance-theatre performance genres covering cultural traditions of China, Korea, Japan, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia. This study will include the socio-religious as well as entertainment genres of performance traditions of Asia: the religious, ritual, folk, and royal court forms of artistic performance; mythology, legends and symbolic interpretations that underlie the thematic core of these performance traditions; issues on the spiritual importance of disciplined training; and the rhythmic variety and diversity across cultures of Asia. Emphasis will be on understanding each genre of performance in its cultural context and the articulation of the traditional past with the globalized present. This course will also generate a dialogue for intercultural translation, namely, the adaptation of Asian performance disciplines in the west.
