Gender Performance in Dance and Dance Theatre

DANCE 368

The course will open discussions on ways in which gender and sexuality are conceptualized and/or symbolized in the artistic performances of selected Asian and Euro-American cultures. It will seek to interpret these historically constituted social formations through a close examination of the diverse cultural constructions of gender meanings, representations, and ideologies. How do societies encode gender? How is the gendered body viewed within and across cultures? How are gender ideologies and images interpreted and reinforced within the power systems of given societies? What is the social perception and interpretation of gendered roles performed on-stage and even sustained in everyday life?

Instructor: Purnima Shah. One course.
