Pedagogies of Dance

DANCE 403S

Preparation of serious, experienced dancers to teach dance technique, performance and other embodied pedagogies to adults/young adults in a college or community setting. Students will critically analyze pedagogical readings from a range of approaches/philosophical platforms. Contemporary analyses of embodied pedagogy will help interrogate questions of agency, power dynamics in the teacher/student relationship, and personal blind spots as characterized by bell hooks. Students will engage in teaching practice, self- and peer- critique, and create tools of self-analysis concerning their teaching and its effect. Prerequisites: DANCE 101 and one intermediate- or advanced-level dance technique course.
