Stand N Your Purpose: The Manifestations of the Pursuit of Tension

Sunday, February 1, -
Speaker(s): Asili Johnson MFA'26
Stand N Your Purpose: The Manifestations of the Pursuit of Tension is an interdisciplinary MFA thesis project by Asili Johnson that explores how artists discover, claim, and embody the value of their work across individual, communal, and ancestral dimensions. Guided by the Adinkra symbol Sankofa-"to return and retrieve what has been forgotten"-the work invites reflection on history, creative intention, and the tensions held in the body through movement, sound, visual art, and technology. Centering Black and Brown artistic contributions, the project creates space for connection, recognition, and advocacy, asserting financial support as an essential complement to cultural and intrinsic value. Collaborators include Pamela Key, Kojo Ayinde Johnson, and Shaelyn Mullins. Viewer discretion advised for younger audiences. Reception in the Ruby Lounge follows performance.
