Ilana Goldman

While at Duke, Ilana Goldman will teach both an intermediate and an advanced ballet class, as well as an MFA in Dance choreography class.

Goldman will also present a lecture on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:00pm in RAC 202. She will show several short dance films and discuss her creative process.

 

About the artist:

Ilana Goldman is a dancer, choreographer, filmmaker, educator, and Associate Professor of Dance and Undergraduate Program Director at Florida State University. She received her BFA in dance from The Juilliard School, where she was awarded the John Erskine Prize for artistic and academic excellence, and her MFA in dance from the University of Washington. She has choreographed works for Sacramento Ballet, New York Theatre Ballet, ARC Dance Seattle, Tallahassee Ballet, Black Rock City Ballet, Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre, Perry-Mansfield, Shenandoah University, University of Washington, and Florida State University. Her choreography was selected for performances at Brooklyn’s Dumbo Dance Festival and the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival. She served as Choreographer in Residence of Bowen McCauley Dance Company from 2018 to 2019 and most recently was Artist-in-Residence at Glacier National Park in the summer of 2022.

Ilana performed professionally as a principal dancer with Oakland Ballet and Sacramento Ballet, as a member of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Trey McIntyre Project, and as a guest artist with Alonzo King LINES Ballet. She danced in works by George Balanchine, Marius Petipa, Agnes de Mille, Eugene Loring, Bronislava Nijinska, Ruth St. Denis, Martha Graham, José Limón, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Donald McKayle, David Parsons, George Faison, Ron Cunningham, Bebe Miller, Susan Marshall, Margaret Jenkins, Dwight Rhoden, Igal Perry, Helen Pickett, Francesca Harper, John Selya, Ron de Jesus, John Clifford, Septime Webre, Sidra Bell, and Amy Seiwert, among others.

She has served in the roles of director, choreographer, editor, and performer in four short dance films: Convergence, Fledgling, InterState, and Threshold, which have screened and won awards at international film festivals in Greece, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, Mexico, Russia, and across the United States. Fledgling was Dance Teacher Magazine’s December 2016 Video of the Month and InterState was featured in the Berlin-based magazine WomenCinemakers

Ilana has taught at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp, Berkeley City Ballet, Sacramento Ballet School, University of Washington, and Regional Dance America’s National Choreography Intensive, in addition to professional company classes and master classes across the country.
